Story #12: Mahabali and Ravana

Lord Vishnu took the third step and pushed Bali to the underground as King of the Paathala. However,  because of Bali's benevolent nature and his good fortune to be blessed by having the sripadha on his head, he was given the boon of immortality.

Later, during thretha Yuga,  Ravana on advice of his ministers did a penance to see Mahabali. Then pathala world opened up for Ravana and he fell straight in front of Bali.

When Mahabali asked him the reason for his wish to see him,  Ravana asked him for his support to defeat Rama. Bali didn't like this proposal as Rama is another avatara of Vishnu. So he advised Ravana about giving up his pride and asking for Rama's mercy.  However,  Ravana was in no mood of listening to any kind of advice.

So,  Mahabali took Ravana to a corner of the Palace and asked him to fetch the items lying there. Despite giving his best try Ravana couldn’t lift those.

Mahabali told Ravana that they were earrings of his Great Grandfather, Hiranyakashipu. He further told him that if he couldn’t lift the earrings, he was to imagine the size and measure of Bali’s great - grandfather and to further imagine the size and measure of the one who brought about his ancestor’s death.

Mahabali thus tried to persuade Ravana to abstain from fighting with Lord Vishnu. Ravana instead of bowing himself out started hurling profanities at the king.

Realizing that Ravana wouldn't heed to any sensible advice, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana. Lord Vamana kicked Ravanan's using only his little toe. Ravana flew out of the underworld and fell in his Palace by the force of the little toe of Vamana.

We must learn from this,  not to underestimate anyone, whom so ever it be. We should also learn to retain the faith in God and not just run behind God 1st the time of need alone.

Om namo bhagavate dadhivaamanaaya !!
