Story #12: Mahabali and Ravana

Lord Vishnu took the third step and pushed Bali to the underground as King of the Paathala. However,  because of Bali's benevolent nature and his good fortune to be blessed by having the sripadha on his head, he was given the boon of immortality.

Later, during thretha Yuga,  Ravana on advice of his ministers did a penance to see Mahabali. Then pathala world opened up for Ravana and he fell straight in front of Bali.

When Mahabali asked him the reason for his wish to see him,  Ravana asked him for his support to defeat Rama. Bali didn't like this proposal as Rama is another avatara of Vishnu. So he advised Ravana about giving up his pride and asking for Rama's mercy.  However,  Ravana was in no mood of listening to any kind of advice.

So,  Mahabali took Ravana to a corner of the Palace and asked him to fetch the items lying there. Despite giving his best try Ravana couldn’t lift those.

Mahabali told Ravana that they were earrings of his Great Grandfather, Hiranyakashipu. He further told him that if he couldn’t lift the earrings, he was to imagine the size and measure of Bali’s great - grandfather and to further imagine the size and measure of the one who brought about his ancestor’s death.

Mahabali thus tried to persuade Ravana to abstain from fighting with Lord Vishnu. Ravana instead of bowing himself out started hurling profanities at the king.

Realizing that Ravana wouldn't heed to any sensible advice, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana. Lord Vamana kicked Ravanan's using only his little toe. Ravana flew out of the underworld and fell in his Palace by the force of the little toe of Vamana.

We must learn from this,  not to underestimate anyone, whom so ever it be. We should also learn to retain the faith in God and not just run behind God 1st the time of need alone.

Story #11: Shakambhari

Once there lived a cruel asura named Durgamasur he was very cruel. He was born in the family of Hiranyaksha. Once he thought that he must attain the Vedas and that he must get his fair share from fire sacrifices. So, he meditated upon Brahma for thousand years. Brahma, became pleased with appeared and gave him the boon he longed for.

From that time, the sages forgot all about the Vedas and all rites and rituals became extinct. The sages began to wonder how they forgot the Vedas and wondered where they went. The Gods became gradually weaker and weaker, not getting their share of the sacrificial offerings.

At this time, that demon invaded the city of heaven. And the Gods, not being able to fight with him took refuge in the caves of the mountain Sumeru and began to meditate on Goddess Parasakthi.

It is said that, when the offered to the Fire, those get transferred to the Sun and get transformed as rains. So when the Homa ceremonies disappeared, there was the scarcity of rain. The earth became quite dry and not a drop of water was found anywhere. Countless people and animals lost their lives. When such calamities were seen, the calm and quiet saints, in their earnestness to worship the Supreme Goddess, began to worship daily with their penance, meditation and worship.

The divine mother appeared with all Beauty and mercy. She began to shed waters from Her eyes. For nine nights continuously, the heavy rains poured down out of the waters flowing from Her eyes. Seeing the misery of all the people, out of pity, She showered incessantly tears from Her eyes; and all the people and Gods felt satisfied and began to praise her.

Devi transformed her appearance into a wonderful form with eyes all over her body and eight hands. She held foods like grains, cereals, vegetables, greens, fruits and other herbs, this new form of Goddess is known as Shakambhari. She is said to have so many eyes so that she doesn't miss it delay on anyone.  She fed every living being with their needs until the earth stabilized with necessary good and water.  The name Shakambhari means nourishing all by vegetables and greens.

Parvati got to know about Durgamasur's evil intentions, so she sent a lady messenger to make him to give the Vedas back to Brahma and also to give back the heaven to Indra. Durgamasur didn't want to, Parvati's messenger was angry and warned him to make preparations for his death.

Great tumult arose. A great battle arose and divine mother took various forms to nullify his army and finally with 15 arrows brought him down.

The three worlds, then, assumed a peaceful appearance when that greatly powerful demon was killed. Then Hari, Hara, Brahma and the other Devas began to praise and chant hymns to the World Mother with great devotion and in voices, choked with feelings. Thus when Brahma, Vishnu, Hara and the other Gods praised and chanted various hymns to the Devi and worshipped Her with various excellent articles, she became instantly pleased. Then the Devi, graciously pleased, handed over the Vedas to the sages. This Devi was praised as Durga for defeating Durgamasura.

It's the mother who feeds us in time of need.  Remembering her always is our duty. It holds good in both material and spiritual world.

Jai jai Shakambhari!  Jai Maa Durge!

Story #10: Parvathi's doubt...

We will see one of my favorite story from Sri Rama Charitra Manas. This story has answer to a question that most of us may have.

Once upon a time Lord Shiva went to great Rishi Agastya  along with his wife Uma. The great  sage narrated the whole Tatva of Lord Sri Rama to the divine couple. Lord Shiva wanted to see his most dear Lord Rama, but Uma was still in dilemma.

She was still confused as how Rama, just a prince, was him self  Lord Mahavishnu. If it is true that he is only Mahavishnu, then why is he not able to find where his wife is and go there immediately and rescue her. Lord Shiva tired his best to convince her, but she did not agree to the versions of Lord Shiva.

So, Lord Shiva and Uma left the Ashram and flew in the sky, to the place in the forest where Rama was weeping and searching for Seetha. Seeing his dear Lord Rama, Lord Shiva  was overwhelmed with love and affection. Devi Uma saw  Lord Shiva, thrilled with love and became doubtful as to why Lord Shiva was enchanted by a mere human prince as Lord Rama. Lord Shiva also tried to convince Maa Uma that it was still a Lila of Lord Ram for his Bhaktas. It was for upgrading of Vedic culture and to teach the human race how a regular life should be.

However Umadevi was still doubtful. She went to the place where divine Lila of Lord Ram was going on.  To check the divinity of Lord Rama, Uma assumed the form of  Sita and approached Lord Ram there in forest.

In an instant,  Lord Rama recognized the trick of Maa Uma. He asked with a smile on face as where was Lord Bhishbhanu (another name of Lord Shiva) and why was she roaming alone in the forest.  At this point, Lord Ram showed some of his divine miracle.

Uma saw that Rama with Mata Sita and Lakshman were still standing beside Maa Uma. Again she saw that Lord Ram in Vishnu form lying in sheshnaag in Ksheerasaagar, and was being prayed by gods and goddesses.

Uma became sad and regretted doubting Shiva. Wherever she looked, she found Lord  Rama and various deities and all creation in him. In awe, she closed her eyes and when she again opened her eyes, everything vanished. She regretted for such acts before Lord Sri Ram. She then went to Lord Shiva with full satisfaction.

The God puts himself and others in trouble sometimes, only was lokha kshemam.  Full belief in his power and benevolence will bring in miracles to our lives

Story #9: Better deeper than wider

Once Chaitanya mahaprabhu was traveling in South India. He arrived at Ranganatha temple. He had darshan of the charming reclined deity and came out.

There he saw one brahmin who was reading Bhagavath Gita. People were joking with him, as how he would read Bhagavath Gita. They were insulting him because this brahmin was illiterate, and he was having a book of Baghavath Gita.

However the brahmin did not care about them. He was having the book as he pleased and was reading in his own way.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu saw this incident. He came to the brahmin and asked him what he was reading. The Brahmin understood that this person wasn't insulting and was asking the question seriously. He replied,  though I don't know to read even an alphabet, I am trying to read this book.

Chaithanya mahaprabhu asked patiently as why he was reading the book. He replied calmly that his Guru, in spite of knowing that he is an illiterate person, had given him the book.

The illiterate Brahmin further said that he saw only the pictures as he does not know how to read.

Compassionately Chaithanya mahaprabhu asked as why he was crying.  For this the Brahmin replied that he remembered Krishna everytime he touched the book.

He said that he remembered how Krishna loved his devotees and came down to do such mundane things by risking himself. Being so great,  Krishna accepting to do such service for his devotee shows how merciful he is.  He said that he thought of all these things everytime he saw the book and pictures,  and these made him cry.

Hearing this Chaithanya Mahaprabhu embraced him. Prabhuji said that the Brahmin's Baghavath Gita reading was perfect as he has grasped the essence of it.

Knowing everything by the face value is nothing when compared to grasping the essence of a small part of a Upanishad. Let's learn to study something or the other, but everytime with full involvement so that we don't miss the focal point of it.

Story #8: Valour of Angadh

Angadh was the child of king Vaali and Thara. He was the nephew of Sugriva. He along with other vanara sena helped Rama to find Seetha. His name means 'person with beautiful limbs'.  Not only were his limbs beautiful,  but they were also equally powerful.  Let's see how he used this power during the time of need.

After the death of Vaali, Sugriva consecrated Angadh as the prince of Kiskindhya. When Vanars started searching for Sita, he was appointed as assistant to Nila. Once Angada learnt the intricate details of his job he was given the duty to search out Sita in every feasible part of South India. He searched each and every area of South up to Rameshwaram. When the battalion was organized to proceed further south, he was made the head of the team.
As soon as Sita was discovered within Lanka, Ram wanted to have some peaceful talk instead of a battle to rescue Seetha. The messengers sent to Ravana were again led by Angad. He told Ravana about Rama's wish and tried to convince him with many strategies. However,  Ravana was firm in his decision in not returning Seetha.

Realizing that Ravana wouldn't heed to peace talks,  he positioned his foot strongly on the floor and threw a challenge that if any person in the Ravana's court could lift his foot Rama would accept defeat. Each and every Rakshasa of Ravana’s army and even his son Indrajit tried to lift his foot but no one could even move.  Seeing this Ravanan's became infuriated and began insulting Ram with abusive words.

Hearing this Angada became furious and hit the ground with enormous power utilizing both his hands and it caused a minor tremor in earth. Ravana fell down and his crown rolled off from his head. Before he could put it again on his head Angada captured it and threw it towards the direction where Rama was waiting. It fell right near the feet of Rama. Ravana directed his men to trap and kill Angadha but he laughed loudly and left.

Then during the battle of Ramayana, Angadha killed Ravana's son Devantaka.

We should learn from this happening in Ramayana,  that using our strength at the right place, at right time will bring in honour.

Story #7: Lesson learned by Rishi Bringhi

Once there was a demon named Andhakasura. He harassed the three worlds with his rustic powers. The demigods and Sages prayed to Lord Shiva to bring an end to this.

To bring peace in world below and above,  the Lord faced a tough battle with the demon. During the battle, Lord Shiva would pierce the chest of Andhakasura with his trident.   The blood that came out from his chest raised numerous demons and all of them fought against the Lord.  This ferocious battle continued for long time.

Seeing this Adi Shakthi transformed into Mahakali and drank up the blood that came out of his body. Shiva then lifted the body of Andhakasura with his Trident and began to burn with his third eye.

The demon Andhakasura realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness.  The compassionate Lord blessed him and transformed him into Bringhi, who turned out staunch devotee of Lord Shiva and never ever left his side.

At this juncture,  Shiva got married with Parvathi. All the sages and deities assembled to get the blessings of the divine couple.  Lord Shiva at this time pronounced that he is Purusha and Parvathi is Prakruthi. Both are required for the well-being of universe.

However,  Bringhi didn't accept this.  He said,  before the wedding he worshipped only Shiva and that he will continue to do the same always.

When other deities and sages circumbulated the divine couple,  Bringhi circumbulated only Siva.  To make him circumbulate her also,  Parvathi sat close to Shiva. Bringhi now took the form of bumble bee and circumbulated Siva alone by going around his neck. Actually his name Bringhi means bumblebee in Sanskrit.

To show him Shiva and Shakti are the same,  they both joined together to form Ardhanaareeswara. This time he took the form of worm with single spike horn and bore thru and circumbulated only the male half.

This infuriated Parvathi.  She withdrew all the prakruthi elements from his body.  He immediately fell down as ashes.  As water, air etc.  which fills the body are governed by ambal.

He rose again to his form, on recommendation of the Lord. Ambal gave him third leg for him to stand and go around them.  He then understood that both of them are essential for the universe to exist and circumbulated both with full heart and devotion.

From this instance mentioned in shivapurana, we learn both men and women have equal importance.  One without other ends up in a meaningless world.

Story #6: Chandikeswara

In the banks of Maniyar, is a beautiful place called Thirucheiganallur.  Skanda Purana says, that lord Muruga stayed here for a day and night and worshipped lord Shiva.  'Saei' in Tamil means child.  The Name of the place literally means place of divine child,  meaning Muruga.

Once there lived a Brahmin named Echcha Dhaththan and his wife Pavithrai.  They were blessed with a divine child.  He was named Vicharasharman.  Upanayanam was done at the appropriate time and he began to learn Vedas.

He once saw a cowherd, hitting a cow with a stick.  He felt very sorry for them and then he himself started to take the cows for grazing.

In the meadows, when the cows were gracing and relaxing,  Vicharasharman used to make Shiva Linga with mud with so much care and did pooja and abhishegam using the cows milk.

Day after day the milk he used from the cow for abhishegam got increased as the number of lingams were increasing.

When his father knew about this,  he came to the meadows and saw the truth. He became furious and kicked one of the lingam.  Seeing this Vicharasharman became very angry and hit his father's leg with the cowherd's stick so strongly, that his father's leg broke.

Lord Shiva got very pleased with the devotion of the kid and so appeared then and there to bless Vicharasharman. When asked what boon he wanted,  Vicharasharman answered that he wanted his father's leg to be healed and that he wanted to keep praying and meditating the Lord always.

The Lord immediately granted his wishes and also gave him the post of Chandikeswara, the one who keeps record of people coming.

He is seen in nearly every Shiva Temple on the northern side of Shiva.  Devotees aren't supposed to take anything from Shiva Temple including the bhasma. Every Shiva Prasad is given to Chandikeswara.  Since he is in meditation always,  to keep our records and also to give the shiva Prasad to him,  devotees clap their hands thrice gently. It's called thalathrayam.

Bhakthi can be shown anywhere and anyhow. It's only the sincerity of the mind that's more important.  We also just learn the importance of love for all creatures from this mythological story.

Chandikeswaraya Namah!!

Story #5: Benefits of Sankatahara Chathurthi

Sankatahara Chathurthi is celebrated in almost every Temple in South India,  when Vinayaka is worshipped during the evening time after the moon rise.  Staunch devotees get up early on that day,  bathe and begin their worship.  They refrain from eating and drinking any cooked food.  They worship vinayaka and the crescent moon and then break their fasting by taking some prasad.

As per Skandha Purana this day,  the fourth day of waning moon, the Holy Trinity blessed Vinayaka as the first God. This day is said to be so dear to Vinayaka that he gets rid of all the sin, of those who take up the vrata.

Let's now hear a beautiful story that portraits the importance of this vrata.

Once upon a time, there lived a sage called  Brushundi.  He was so much a devotee of the elephant headed god, that he himself was blessed with a long trunk.  People and devas from far and wide came to his ashram to get his blessings.

Hearing about his greatness,  Indra once came to the ashram in his pushpaka vimana.  The sage explained the importance and benefits of Vinayaka worship to him.  Indra listened carefully and got the sage's blessings and left back to Indralokha.

On his way back, he flied over the country ruled by Surasena.  There lived a sinner in the country, who eyed the vimana. The sinner was so cursed, that the vimana fell down to earth immediately. Indra came to know the reason for the fall of vimana. The day before this incident happened was Sankatahara chathurthi. He met king Surasena and asked him, if someone in his kingdom would give him the punyapalan of fasting completely on the previous day.  Only that could make his vimana fly again.

The king arranged for a search through out the country, only to find that none had fasted on the previous day.  At that time,  Indra and the king saw that the guards of vinayaka taking the soul of a old lady.

Indra inquires as who that lady was and what great deed she did to get such privilege. The guards replied that she was just another person who didn't have any merits except that she fasted on the previous day completely,  that too because of her sickness and that she passed away on the day after fasting.  The unknowing fasting on such day itself had got her such benefits, that she was being carried away to Svananda Lokha(adobe of Lord vinayaka).

As they moved,  breeze that touched the body of the lady passed over the vimana of Indra.  The pushpaka vimana started immediately. This showcased the punyapalan of fasting on Sankatahara chathurthi.

Fasting on the day of Sankatahara chathurthi, not only brings punyapalan,  but also brings in the satisfaction and inculcate more devotion in us...

Story #4: The story of Nandi

Long ago there lived a sage called Shilada.  He didn't have any child and so did penance for a long time. Eating only silas, meaning stone, gave him the name Shilada. After this staunch penance, lord Shiva appeared before him and gave him the boon of getting very famous person as his son.

After that, when Shilada was turning the soil, as per the god's message,  he found a child. It had three eyes and four hands. He took it with him to his home.  On reaching home he saw that the child has gotten the usual human form. Shilada named the child Nandi.  Nandi in Sanskrit means happiness.  The child was a very fast learner, and learned Vedas and Puranas before he was 8 years old. He grew up as a steadfast devotee of Lord Shiva.

At this time Mithra and Varuna came to the ashram of Shilada and stayed for two days.  Nandi took very good care of them.  At the time of leaving they both blessed Shilada with long life and Nandi with fame.  Shilada didn't miss to see the sadness in their voices when they blessed Nandi.  He followed them and asked the reason for it.  They reluctantly admitted that the child may not live long.  Hearing this Shilada was dumbstruck.  He returned very sadly. Nandi pestered his father and came to know the truth.

The news didn't bother Nandi for even a second.  He readily consoled his father and said that there is no need to worry. His lord would save him.  Getting permission from his father, he reached a forest and started doing tapas by chanting Rudram continuously.

After several months,  Shiva appeared before him and asked him what he wanted.  On seeing Shiva, he changed his mind. He said he wished to chant rudram one crore time.  Shiva blessed him with his wish.  So,  he continued chanting  rudram. This happened over and again until he chanted rudra many crore times.

At last when Shiva appeared, he said he wished to sit near Shiva always.  Shiva blessed him immensely saying that he would also like to sit facing him always.  Shiva changed him to a bull form so that he wouldn't miss seeing Nandi when he had to go anywhere also.

Even today we can see Nandi sitting in temples facing Shiva.  It never goes near Shiva.  Only the Lord comes near it,  when there is a procession.

Nandi symbolizes and preaches us that waiting, remembering and meditating brings in immense results.

Story #3: Why was Bheema stopped by Anjaneya?

Once Dharma wanted to do Raajasuya Yagnam. On hearing details from the sages he came to know that the yagnam will be complete and blessed if Purushamrigham was present there.  Purushamrigham is one of the ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, having human face and Lion body.

Bheema readily accepted the task of bringing Purushamrigham.  He walked towards south where he was told the creature lived. He was too sure of himself, as he believed he was the most brave and strong person on earth.  Slight ego blossomed within him.

On the way,  he met Hanuman lying down with his tail across the path.  Thinking it was just a monkey Bheema tried to move it and found that he wasn't able to move the tail even an inch. Hanuman showed himself and blessed him and got rid of his ego.

After this Hanuman gave him three strands of hair from his tail and said it would be useful when there is a need.  Taking that in hand Bheema went to meet Purushamrigham.

Bheema invited Purushamrigham to the yagnam. The creature accepted the invite on one condition.  It will chase Bheema till Hasthinapura where the yagnam was being held.  If the creature catches Bheema, it will eat him.  Bheema,  thinking of his brother's wish to have the creature during the yagnam,  accepted the challenge.

Bheema started to run and the creature chased him.  In nearly no time,  the creature was about to catch him.  Bheema thought of the hair of Hanuman, and threw one of it there.  There arised many Shiva Lingas from it.

Being a devout Shiva bhaktha, Purushamrigham started to do pooja to each Shiva as per the tradition.  By this time Bheema ran a long distance.  After finishing pooja to all the Shiva Lingas, Purushamrigham chased and almost caught Bheema.  This occurred three times.

The last time Purushamrigham caught up with Bheema. It caught hold of his leg.  However,  Bheema's body was inside Hasthinapura. Now both argued on whose side victory was.

Yudhishtra came there and heard everything.  He then passed the judgement to cut off Bheema's leg alone and give it to the creature.

Pleased by the unbiased judgement,  Purushamrigham left Bheema free and blessed the yagnam with fullest satisfaction.

Dharma or righteousness always brings in happiness.

Story #2: Barbarika's thoughtless vow !

Any vow should be taken considering all its implications. If not, it will bring in disaster.  Great example of this is Barbarika.

Barbarika was the son of Ghatotkacha and grandson of Bhima. He learnt all Marshall arts from his mother. The ashtadevas, seeing his devotion,  gave him three infallible asthraas.  (at this point,  let's recollect the difference between asthra and arrow.  An arrow once shot doesn't come back. An asthra on the other hand after completing the task returns back to its owner). The first asthra would mark all the friends and allies.  The second one would mark those that aren't involved and are just there witnessing. The third would get all the unmarked targets done with.
Barbarika with a thought of being helpful,  took an oath that he would always be in a losing side in a battle.
Time rolled by and the battle of Mahabharata became inevitable.
Krishna wanted to check the potential of Barbarika,  so he asked to tie all the leaves of a near by tree. Without the knowledge of Barbarika,  Krishna hid one leaf under his feet.  The first asthra of Barbarika marked all the fruits and flowers of the tree that should not be hurt.  The second asthra marked the other tree leaves that are nearby.  The third asthra began collecting all unmarked leaves, essentially all the leaves. On collecting all leaves on the tree,  the asthra came towards Krishna's foot to collect that leaf also. Krishna understood that even if in hiding,  enemies marked by Barbarika would not endure.
Krishna, then said to Barbarika,  you are the most powerful and brave warrior of all time.  For that reason,  I beg to have your head as a dhanam.  It is custom to have a Bali before the battle begins.  Barbarika immediately accepts, but in return asks Krishna the favor of allowing his head alone to see the full battle.  Krishna beheads him and places his head on a nearby hill. Barbarika's head becomes a judge in the battle.
Krishna then explains his act of asking Barbarika's head as charity.  If Barbarika had participated in the battle,  he would be battling for pandavas in the beginning, as they were weaker side.  The first time Barbarika shoots an arrow,  the opposite side would have become weaker. So, to keep up his vow, Barbarika would have changed sides.  He would be oscillating between the sides till the battle was over. By the time the battle got over,  only Barbarika would remain alive.
The thoughtless vow of Barbarika became the reason for his end of life.

This story tells us the significance of why we must think twice or thrice before talking anything.

Hare Krishna!!

P. S. : Barbarika is still worshipped in the Name of balideva and Khattushyam in Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat

Story #1: Ekadhantha.. The power of incompleteness

Beginning my blog traditionally with the story of vinayaka.

Vinayaka as we all know got his elephant head after battle with his father, lord Shiva-who wasn't aware that Ganesha was his son.

Once Vinayaka was guarding door for his father, who was meditating.  That time Parasurama came there and demanded audience with the Lord.  Ganesha strictly denied access.
Parasurama, well known for his anger, got very furious, and began to fight with Ganesha.
The battle went to a stage when Parasurama threw his axe at Ganesha. The axe broke one of the tusks.
Seeing the broken tusk,  Parasurama felt guilty for his mistake and for getting angry, and asked Ganesha to forgive him.
Right at that time the door opened and Lord Shiva came out.
Ganesha instead of getting angry thanked Parasurama.
Siva seeing this kind gesture,  blessed Ganesha, and offered to make the tusk as before.
However, Ganesha politely refused it. He said he was happy to have one tusk incomplete.
He went on saying,  "Only if something is incomplete, we will work towards it to complete it. Similarly,  when there is a fallacy or defect, we will work to make people over look it.  Once it is complete,  we will feel at ease and stop working.
"This broken tusk,  Will make me crave for more knowledge and do more hard work"
He went on to use the broken tusk, to write the all famous Mahabharata.

The words uttered by the great Ganesha, is to be remembered and followed.  Rather than being and feeling letdown by our shortcomings, we must work in other directions to make a strong positive impression on the people.  That way, the society will see only the positive in us and ignore our shortcomings.

Jai Shri Ganesha!!!
